The first thing you should know before acquiring a Pekingese for shows, is if it weighs over 14 pounds that is an automatic disqualification. When you get the right one, it will be a winner in any circle. At one time, these pups were highly revered in China. They are regal and proud. The Pekingese can be cream, white, sable, black, tan and sometimes grey. They should be no taller than 9 inches and they are front heavy by the proper standards. The pekingese dog breed has a large head in proportion to their body. That is typical and part of the breed standard. When you are shopping breeders of these fine pups, make sure to have all the information about the standards before you choose one for showing.
The Pekingese live long healthy lives up to about 15 years. There are a few health issues like heart, breathing, knees, hips, eyes, very difficult births and they also catch colds quite easily. Most of the time, these dogs do not have serious health issues, but these are just some things to watch for when you are getting one from a breeder. The breeder should know of any congenital problems or health issues. All the way around, the pekingese dog breed is smart, sweet and makes a great companion or show dog for anyone.
